Esta obra cubre los temas esenciales de los cursos de máquinas eléctricas en donde se revisan los conceptos de circuitos magnéticos, transformadores y máquinas eléctricas rotatorias. En este sentido el objetivo central del libro es dar al lector información clara de los modelos que gobiernan las máquinas eléctricas y los sistemas de control empleados, para poder usarlos de manera exitosa en aplicaciones industriales. Esta segunda edición de Máquinas eléctricas. Técnicas modernas de control está organizada en cuatro partes fundamentales: Primera parte (capítulos 1 a 2): presenta los conceptos fundamentales de los circuitos magnéticos y del balance de la energía electromecánica. Segunda parte (capítulos 3 a 6): expone la teoría y operación del transformador, además de tratar los transformadores de potencia y distribución. Tercera parte (capítulos 7 a 11): presenta el motor de inducción, las máquinas síncronas, el generador síncrono, así como la operación de generadores y motores síncronos. Cuarta parte (capítulos 12 a 16): expone las máquinas de corriente directa, la teoría y aplicación de las técnicas modernas de control y la teoría y aplicación de las máquinas eléctricas especiales. Además de este contenido, en la página web de esta obra se encuentran prácticas de laboratorio, presentaciones, lecturas complementarias, videos de aplicación, así como la exposición de la teoría de los temas avanzados más importantes de esta materia. Pedro Ponce Cruz estudió la carrera de Ingeniería en Control y Automatización en el IPN y realizó sus estudios de posgrado en el mismo instituto obteniendo los grados de Maestro en Ciencias y de Doctor en Ciencias con la especialidad en ingeniería eléctrica. Sus líneas de investigación son control, automatización, robótica, inteligencia articial, máquinas eléctricas, fuentes alternas de energía, entre otras. Además de haberse desempeñado como ingeniero de proyectos de desarrollo industrial y ser asesor de diversas compañías transnacionales, tiene escritos 10 libros y 6 capítulos en diferentes editoriales nacionales e internacionales. Ha asesorado más de 35 tesis de licenciatura y posgrado en el área de control y automatización, es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores y ha recibido numerosos reconocimientos académicos nacionales e internacionales.
